Frank Sawkins

Post by kjell » Sat Apr 23, 2011 3:48 pm

Hello,

I have come across a Scottish player playing for Frigg in Norway between 1947 and 1951 with the name of Frank Sawkins. He was an attacker. Sources says he was from Edinburgh, and he played for West Ham United junior team before WW2. I know he married and settled down in Oslo. He died 28 February 1989 in Oslo, Norway. Does anyone know when he was born, and clubs he played for before 1947?

That's an unusual surname and I can't find a record of any pre-war player in either the English or Scottish leagues. The public profiler of British surnames has Ilford as the most common place for the surname in 1881 but by 1998 (the only other year available) that has changed to Lerwick. Given its rarity I'd suggest it wouldn't have needed more than a few people to have moved to Shetland for it to become the most common. That would also make sense with him playing in Norway.

OTOH I can't find a Frank or Francis Sawkins born in Scotland between 1910-1932 (using those dates as extremes for his playing career)

Hello,

Thanks for checking your sources. I have found another article in Aftenposten that says he was 17 years old when the war broke out, and that he was wounded at the battles of Arnhem. Up until this point he played regularly for an English military team.

So born around 1922/1923 in Edinburgh if Aftenposten is correct.

Hello,

I found his birth date - it was given as 16 January 1925, which again then makes the articles from 1947 a bit out of touch.

Frankie was a talented footballer who played for West Ham Youth. He met and Married a lady named Solvac ? and went on to have a son and a daughter. He never returned to this country only for a few brief visits. My father never forgave him for not coming back and playing for West Ham after the war.Sadly I have never met my Norwegian relatives

Hi east16,

I had a look in the archives for Aftenposten again and found a few more pieces.

His wife's name was Solveig.

On the 10 March 1955 they got a son named Glenn. In the local newspaper under "births", it says "trouble arrived" and the names of the parents.

When Glenn is married in 1980 he lived in a city called Honefoss.

I also found him in the online phone directory, http://www.gulesider.no/person/resultat/Glenn+SAwkins

Regards,

Kjell
