Post by rangers123 » Mon Feb 27, 2006 7:49 pm

hey can anyone tell me when the scottish football season begins and when it ends? ( is it 31st july-31st may?). Also do the teams in scotland or england have a winter break and if so how long do they get off?
im also eager to find out when pre season training normally commences before the season begins!

cheers

For many years the season started on the second Saturday in August and finished on the last Saturday in April other than in seasons when a bad winter forced an extension into May.

From the 1980s it became more common for the season to end in May to take account of the increased number of games and competitions.

In recent years the Scottish Cup Final has ended the season on the last Saturday in May.

From the late 1990s the season's start began to get earlier as clubs started European matches in July. Occasionally the season has started on the last Saturday in July so that it can finish in time for a break before major international competitions like the World Cup and European Championships. For example this year the Scottish Cup Final will be on May 13th.

The only winter breaks came with the establishment of the SPL in 1998-99 but these were discontinued after three seasons.

There's never been a winter break in England and the English season usually starts a week after Scotland.

Pre-season training varies. Usually from around the second week in July but this can be later if clubs have been on post-season tours or earlier if involved in early European games.

so generally speaking, players get 6 weeks off before pre season begins if they aren't involved in major competitions?
Alot of players often get injuried during the pre season.....have you any ideas why this is the case. Is it the fact that players have a 6 week holiday where they are often inactive and once pre season begins they undergo intense exercise which therefore results in injury!
are there any ways that could prevent these injuries occuring in the 1st place or anything that coaches could differ in their preparation to the upon coming season?
is it true that coaches often get players to do intense running and particularly alot of uphill running which can often lead to pulled hamstrings which is a 6 week lay off am ought to believe.

many thanks
