East End Park - attendance records

Postby bluedragon » Tue Apr 23, 2013 6:41 pm

I am trying to establish the official attendance at the Dunfermline Athletic v West Bromwich Albion European Cup Winners Cup tie on 15th January 1969. I have tried newspaper reports but the best I have got is either 22,073 or a "round" 26,000. Can anyone help please?

22,073 is correct as far as I'm aware. The capacity was limited by the police to 25,000 following the near-disastrous scenes against Celtic at the end of the previous season when it's believed around 33,000 squeezed into the ground. If I remember correctly (and I can't find my notes on this just now), it wasn't a sell-out and not everyone who'd bought a ticket turned up.
It's the club's third highest European attendance, after Ujpest Dozsa and Everton.

Thanks Gordon. That's great.

And I make it their ninth highest overall.

Upon checking where this game stood in the pecking order, I find that I have it above Everton. I have 21,813 for that game. What figure do you have?

I have 22,713 for the Everton game. A difference of exactly 900, curiously.
This figure was included in 1985's 'Black & White Magic' book - the reason I've always thought this was correct rather than 21,813 is that the authors were given access to the club's own records.
I'll make a few enquiries and see what I come up with.

I always accept club records over paper or book ones. My figure is from the NOTW annual 1963-64. The 900 difference is odd. Normally for a club Dunfermline's size I'd put that down to season tickets (ie they sold 900 and counted them all) but presumably these weren't valid for European games?

I'm sure that season tickets weren't valid. All I've come across so far is a small piece in a programmes prior to the Ujpest Dozsa game saying that tickets will be reserved for season ticket holders to purchase up to a certain date. If that was the case in 1961/62, I assume it was the same the following season.
Hopefully I'll know more when certain people get back to me.

Thanks to you both for following up on my original question. I am looking at the West Bromwich Albion game in particular and it would be great to know Where that attendance was in the pecking order. Incidentally I have two attendances for the return leg but that is only a couple of hundred different.

Most newspapers seem to have given 32,000 as the attendance at the Hawthorns but there is a more accurate figure of 32,373 (which I'm sure I got from David).

Thanks Gordon. My WBA friend is not sure and he tells me it was "32,269 (some sources say 32,373)". So clearly some doubt!

I got this figure either from a WBA history or contemporary annual. Forget which and as books are still piled in boxes after house move and internet yet to be connected can't post details either. Will put on memory stick tomorrow and post.

This is my Dunfermline 'Top Ten' crowds, using the 'old' Everton figure.

27816 v Celtic 30/4/68 Lg (though 33000 would be nearer the mark)
24377 v Rangers 1/3/58 SC
24049 v Ujpest 20/2/61 ECWC
22918 v Celtic 6/9/69 Lg
22878 v Celtic 21/9/68 Lg
22728 v Celtic 17/2/71 SC
22595 v Motherwell 23/2/52 SC (I also have a note of 22295 but I think possibly a typo
22175 v Rangers 6/3/68 Lg
22073 v West Brom 15/1/69 ECWC
22055 v Rangers 9/3/63 Lg

I have 21813 v Everton 31/10/62 as 11th but will change if Gordon confirms 22713. That would be 7th biggest with three dropping down one and current tenth dropping out.

For the League Cup, the highest I have is 21291 v Celtic 21/9/66

David,
My figures are the same as yours for all but two.
For the Celtic match on 6 September 1969, I have 23,366. Seems strange that you don't have it - you gave me that figure!

As for the Motherwell cup-tie in 1952, 22,295 is the generally accepted figure but that didn't include season ticket holders, a maximum of 1,000 at the time. I don't know the official figure but it's likely that most would have turned up so I count the attendance as 23,295. The local paper certainly mentions 23,000 a couple of times.

The official capacity for the game was a very random 23,608. It had been limited to 20,000 earlier in the season for a League Cup tie against Rangers, as East End had no crush barriers, but as it coped quite comfortably the local Chief Inspector allowed it to be increased.
