Airdrie Charity Cup - 1890

Post by nightfire » Wed Jun 05, 2013 10:23 pm

For season 1889/90, Carfin Shamrock are shown as the winners:

http://scottish-football-historical-arc ... charitycup

The only detail shown is that Carfin Shamrock drew 2-2 with Airdrie on the 17th May 1890.

Unfortunately, there no issues of the Motherwell Times for 1890 on the British Newspapers Archive that I could check.

Does anybody have any info on the match between Carfin & Airdrie and how Carfin were declared winners.

I checked this with the Airdrieonians' historian, John Henderson, and he advised that the semi-final was actually between Carfin Shamrock and Albion Rovers. It was a draw but Carfin won the replay on October 31st.

Airdrieonians drew with Royal Albert on October 4th in the other semi-final, Royal Albert winning the replay on June 7th.

Carfin beat Royal Albert 2-0 in the final on June 14th.

The semi-final between Albion Rovers and Carfin Shamrock went to three games according to the Rovers history 'Boys From The Brig' by Robin Marwick, Unfortunately no dates.

Sorry, my mistake, 4th October should read 24th October.

Mmm, not sure about the estimable Robin Marwick's book, but Mr Henderson is seldom wrong.

It's possible that on this occasion he just might be. To take Brian's point re the date. Though Marwick doesn't give dates, he says that on the Tuesday after the first tie with Carfin Shamrock, Rovers played a friendly against Sunderland. The RSSSF archive has that match on an unknown date in May 1890. With an Express Cup match v Motherwell and two replayed ties v Carfin Shamrock that ties in with a mid-June final.

Hello,

I have found an article in Dundee Courier for 29 December 1890 that will throw some confusion into this maybe.

It says "Montrose ..... will on Friday face the Royal Albert, holders of the Lanarkshire Cup, 1888+89+90, and of the Airdrie Chairty Cup 1889+90.

Regards,

Kjell

Guys, a mistake right enough! The matches were played in May not October, over five successive Saturdays at the end of the season.

Put that mistake down to the after-effects of the mighty 'Onians return!!

Did you find any newspaper reports on the matches?

I'm going to check the Motherwell Times at the Motherwell Heritage Library when I'm next up in Scotland

If you have a subscription, the Motherwell Times is available in the BNA. Though I don't know exactly which years they have so far.

1890 is missing from their archive but I have confirmed that it is held at the Motherwell Heritage Library so will check it there possibly later this week as I have to travel up to Glasgow on Thursday

FAO - Nightfire (or anyone else whose interested) - John H has advised he has copies of reports on all the Carfin ties and would be happy to scan them through to you. If you pass me your private email address, I'll forward it on to him.
