The three Scandinavian countries come in together at positions 15-17 in Europe but at 27th in the world with a top flight average of 7,901 Denmark are four ahead of Sweden and six in front of Norway globally. Best supported Brøndby, at 235th in the world trail Sweden’s top two despite playing in a better-supported league. In large part this can be attributed to the Danes playing in a smaller, twelve-club league which is conducive to higher crowds. Best last season was 32,846 and the lowest 1,546

All teams meet each other three times in top level Superliga, producing thirty-three games each and 198 for the season. There is no split. The system is identical to the Scottish Premiership just before the Scottish split. The Danish system is inherently unfair as the top six from the previous season play seventeen home games and the lower half plus promoted sides just sixteen. On the other hand there are no reprieves from relegation via a play-off. The bottom two go down automatically.

The second tier Danish 1st Division operates identically to the first, with the same number of teams and matches. The top two go straight up and the bottom pair straight down. Surprisingly, given that second levels in both Norway and Sweden contain clubs ranked 17-32 and Denmark’s just 13-24, the Danes lag behind both in attendances. Their average of 1,345 leaves them 31st in the rankings. This was despite the presence of several well-known names participating. Highest last season was 6,731 and lowest 184.

The third level 2nd Division is split into two regions – East and West – both with sixteen teams. The champions of both go up and the bottom three go down to the Denmark series, the last level of the pyramid operated by the DBU although promotion and relegation continues at regional levels below.

The East division was much better supported than the West last season with an average of 503 compared to 309. The overall average was 406. Perhaps the Western region may gain some compensation in that it plays host to a team with one of the most glorious names in world football – Middelfart!

Best crowd in the East was 2,192 and in the West 1,475. In both divisions there were several crowds minus fifty.
