Ad in the background is for "Firestone Pneus" tyres, which appears to be of Portuguese origin.

Hi mad Mac,that's what I thought. I live in Portugal and I've showed the photo around,no one recognises it. Apparently at this time there were not many football fields with grass in Portugal. The coach also worked in Norway and Holland, the goalkeeper looks like he comes from there more than Portugal

From what I remember of my schoolboy French: "Pneus" is French for tyres.

Also, there appears to be a set of rugby posts in the background, on the left of the picture as we look at it. Given rugby has only recently made any impression in Portugal - I would say it is a French team.

The small player, second on the left of the group front row as we look at also seems familiar.

Finally, the official on the extreme right of the front row is wearing his raincoat with a sort of French insouciance.

Thanks for the replies, great spot snuff of the rugby posts,I didn't see them. Sporting Lisbon and Benfica were playing rugby in the 1920s but its def.not them and there was only 6 or so other clubs playing at that time.If it is indeed French it throws a spanner in the works for me. I'm researching the coach in the suit in the photo, ex Burnley and England player Bob Kelly. Based on other photos of Bob I have ,it looks like the the 1930s,but I have accounted for just about every year for Bob in the 1930s and it was all UK. Leather stocking,I think Maccabi was formed in 1948 which is interesting as its about the only year I haven't placed Bob at a club. However in 1946/47 Bob was coach at Sporting Lisbon,I have a lot of photos of Bob from this time and he looks at least 5/10 years older than he does in the mystery photo. He finished at Stockport 1938 and got a pub,by 1940 he was out of football and working in an office,I wonder if he was in France 1939 for a short while before the war kicked in? There is no mention anywhere of him working in France but that doesn't mean he didn't especially if it was a brief spell

I have no specific information, but what did Bob Kelly do during the War (apart from work in an office in 1940)? Could it be a military team?

When did he work as a coach in the Channel Islands? In the early 50's a football guide-book was published in the Netherlands that has some career details of all coaches working at the highest level at that time. Bob Kelly should be in it. I don't have a copy at home, but in a few weeks time I can read it, maybe it has some useful information.

Hi,thanks for the replies, from 1940/46 Bob was a clerk in an office and appears to have been out if football entirely, in early 1946 he was coaching in Norway,,i cant find anything on this, maybe it will be mentioned in the Dutch book,in 1946/47 he was at Sporting Lisbon,he was in the channel islands briefly in the 1950s.He also coached in Switzerland and Holland , but looking at other photos of Bob this is def.1930s,and this is where I am confused I can't see where in his 1930s timeline it can fit in.He was playing then managing in England until he finished at Stockport in 1938,march 1939 he took over a pub in Stockport,1940 he was living in Blackpool and working in an office. Is it possible he could have done a bit of coaching in France in the close season when he was at Carlisle/Stockport? The only other option is that the pub failed quickly and he had a few months in France before the war broke out, I did notice in 1939 out of 14 French teams about 6 had British coaches but no mention of Bob.

Would the advert in the background be for Huey Lewis & the Pneus?

There's no information in the Dutch book (Elsevier voetbaljaarboek 1953) that you haven't got already.
