Like Brian I found that Rangers reserve game but also found these items in the Sunday Post.

Sunday Post 8 September 1946: Rangers were due to play Clyde in a Glasgow Cup semi-final on Thursday 12 September 1946 but it was postponed until Tuesday 17 September 1946 as “Rangers, because of present injuries, couldn’t see their way to a game this week.

Sunday Post 15 September 1946: mentions Hugh Watson DFC and “his appearance for Rangers at a charity game at Auchinleck last Monday…..

Which prompts the question: did Rangers play a full-ish strength team against Partick that night?

I asked the question on another site and an Auchinleck Talbot historian replied to say the match was mentioned in the book "History of Auchinleck Talbot FC” that was written about 30 years ago. It says: "The following season [1946/47] was also a disappointment when the trophy cabinet remained blank for another year. The village was buzzing with excitement by the end of the season when the mighty Glasgow Rangers played at Beechwood against a District XI for some charity funds. Talbot had three players in the side that day: Niven, Robertson and Gouldie...."

This throws another spanner in the works as it says “end of season”. Anyway he has kindly said he will follow this up to see what else he can find.

Thanks for the replies, the info I had was ,it was a Rangers X1 and I did overlook the fact they had a 2ndX1 cup tie that same night Bluedragons post makes me tend to think it could have been postponed because of injury problems and scheduled later in the season.
