Scotlands first match in Wales 1877

Post by keb mo » Fri Apr 27, 2007 4:48 pm

A lot of Scottish & English football archives record the venue for this match as Acton Park,Wrexham.

In fact the venue for this game was actually the Racecourse Ground Wrexham. This makes the Racecourse the worlds oldest surviving International football venue.

(The mistake has probably come about because Acton Park was the venue for the first ever Welsh Cup final the following year)

Anyway for this first game the players of both teams actually changed in the famous Turf Hotel adjacent to the ground before making their way on to the field of play.

No doubt some of the more senior members of this forum will have enjoyed a pint in the Turf before a Wales /Scotland fixture in the 60s & 70s.

The Turf Hotel is currently under the threat of demolition from a London based property developer who is intent on building some flats on the site.

Welsh football fans have drawn up the inevitable petition to protest against this and we were hoping that we might get some support from North of the Border .

You can read more about the Turf here,

And you can sign the petition here,

Thank you for reading this.

Petition signed and posted. A wee querie, is the Racecourse Ground the oldest surviving ground with international football still played on it, as the West of Scotland cricket ground is still in place, or have I got the wrong cricket ground?

You've got the right cricket ground but The Racecourse is probably the oldest surviving international venue which is
a) a regular football venue
b) still in use as an international venue (though whether this is still valid in light of the FAW's commitment to the Millennium Stadium is debatable)

many thanks for your support.
it now looks like the Turf has had a reprieve as the brewery has pulled out of negotiations with the developer who has just withdrawn his proposals.

fingers crossed!
