The men who made Scotland: 1872-1939

I'm delighted to announce publication of my new book. The men who made Scotland: the definitive Who's Who of Scottish Football Internationalists, 1872-1939 As regular visitors here will know, I have been working on this for several years and this is the final result. A4, 260 pages quarter of a milli...

Yes, I've got a copy. If you DM me your email address I'll send scans to you. There are indeed 72 pages, although 70 and 72 are adverts.

Re: Photos

I was intrigued by James Durkin so I had a look at his story and I think you may have his dates wrong. There is a bit of uncertainty in the papers whether he was Durkin or Durkan, but he was said to be from Bannockburn and his juvenile club was Vale of Bannock. So that leads me to think that he was ...

In the footsteps of Andrew Watson

A new BBC Scotland documentary was broadcast last night, featuring some well-kent faces. Former Rangers player Mark Walters looks back at his career with the Glasgow club to assess the racism he faced while playing for them. Watching harrowing footage of his early matches, he vividly describes the v...

Re: Scottish Industrial Court

Hi, and welcome to the forum. It is a great shame that the SPFA doesn't have proper records, but hopefully the fine people on this forum can help out. First thing to mention is that you can only post pictures to the forum if they are online already - there is no facility to add an attachment. The qu...

Re: WILLIAM ALLAN

There is clearly a confusion between two William Allans. The Falkirk Herald on 5 Dec 1906 has a profile of him with photo, and states that he is 25 years old (ie born 1881) and a native of Falkirk. Senior clubs: East Stirlingshire, Falkirk, Rangers, Albion Rovers, Falkirk. No mention of Montrose. Hi...

Re: John Cameron

Hibs did not play any football at all in 1891/92, having gone out of business. The club was resurrected in February 1893 and played friendlies until the end of the season, but none of their players was called Cameron.

Hibs were admitted to the Scottish League Division Two for 93/94.

Re: Scottish Junior Cup Final 1888

The Scottish Umpire said that both teams were at full strength for the second replay, which means there were no surprises. As there were no contemporary reports with line-ups, the answer can be found in retrospective articles. The Wishaw Press of 8 December 1939 covers the golden wedding of one of t...

Re: Goddard for Ayr United?

There is no mention of him in the Ayr United history, but there were several trialists who played under an assumed name that season so it is possible he was one of them.

Just to add to the confusion, the Scottish Referee credits Morrison with the Ireland goal.

Re: Rangers Minor Friendlies

The first place I would look is the Evening Times, if you haven't already done so. For example, here is the edition for Saturday 4 April 1970: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2mus-XyGPC0C&dat=19700404&printsec=frontpage&hl=en Looking at that date, it does cast doubt on the Drumchapel fixture ...

The Evening Times match report for the 1951 game says: 'The incentive in this game was the cup presented by Mr Mears, chairman of Chelsea, for annual competition between the clubs.'
