Dates of birth and death
We are hoping our book of biographies of every Bristol Rovers player, 1883-1939 will soon appear. I will put details on here when I know more.
In the meantime, a few Scottish players get a name-check in the text. For most I have dates, but am looking for years only of birth and death for the following:
Willy Murray of Hearts, 1930s
Jimmy Stein date of death
Tom Granger of Celtic
David Currie of Hearts
Pat Currie of East Fife
John Donald, various clubs in 1920s
Neil Gibson b1873
Andrew Paterson, Lochgelly keeper
Paddy Callaghan of St Johnstone
Frank Bridgeford of Forfar
Jamie Thompson of Vale of Leven
John Hunter of Armadale
David Muir, Third Lanark pre-WW1
Alex Hamilton, at Falkirk in 1920
Bill McCartney of Hibs
I appreciate some of these are very obscure; others (Stein, Gibson) were household names. All help very gratefully received.

Re: Dates of birth and death
Neil Gibson 1873-1947
Bill McCartney 1879-1945.
What are their links to Bristol Rovers?
Nobody called Tom Granger in the Celtic Who's Who. Do you mean John?

Re: Dates of birth and death
Thank you. Could well be John Granger, if one played for Celtic.
No direct link with Rovers. I have written biographies of all Rovers players, so occasionally other names get mentioned, perhaps supplying the cross for his headed goal or being the keeper who saved his shot. For completeness, I am trying to add dates where known. Thank you for your help in enabling this.

Re: Dates of birth and death
Does anyone have dates of birth and death for the St Johnstone keeper (circa 1923) Paddy Callaghan? He could be the same player as the Patrick Callaghan who was at Hibs, 1921-22, but I have no evidence.
Very grateful for any reply.

Re: Dates of birth and death
Patrick Callaghan was a winger rather than a ‘keeper but he is the player who went from Hibernian to St Johnstone. The great Fitbastats website gives some references to newspaper reports that together with some other sources give the following information:Bristol Rovers wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 4:34 pmDoes anyone have dates of birth and death for the St Johnstone keeper (circa 1923) Paddy Callaghan? CAREER
Fauldhouse United to Hibernian (August 1921)
Hibernian to St Johnstone (March 1922)
St Johnstone to Albion Rovers (June 1922)
Albion Rovers to Aberaman Athletic (1925)
Aberaman Athletic to Aberdare Athletic (1926)
Aberdare Athletic to Bristol City (1927)
Bristol City to Aberdare & Aberaman Athletic (1928)
DATE OF BIRTH
Dundee Evening Telegraph (16 August 1921) reported that he was 20 years of age at the time.
Western Daily Press (7 October 1927) reported that he was a Scottish Junior Internationalist at 17 years of age. He represented the Lanarkshire Junior League against the Irish Intermediate League on 26 February 1921.
The English National Football Archive gives his year and place of birth as 1904, Longbridge, Ireland that ties in with the second of those two newspaper references.
I hope that this helps.
