Jack Young (Kilmarnock, 1907-09)

Post by Bristol Rovers » Wed Mar 08, 2023 10:22 pm

Does anyone here have any information on possible dates of birth or death for Jack Young, please? I don't have any details of his parents' names or potential wife's name either. Anything would be gratefully received.

Below is his biography with relation to his time at Bristol Rovers:

JOHN YOUNG
b Hurlford, Ayrshire
Début: 1.9.06 v New Brompton
Career: Kilmarnock Shawbank; Hurlford; May 1904 Newcastle United; July 1905 Kilmarnock; March 1906 Hurlford; 26.5.06 Bristol Rovers; April 1907 Notts County (trial); 18.5.07 Norwich City; 20.2.08 Kilmarnock [32,13]; October 1908 Hurlford; 1.11.09 Crystal Palace; 29.8.10 Hurlford (to 1920).

An attacking player with a penchant for returning to his home-town club, Jack Young added seven goals in fifteen Southern League games for Palace and six in 24 for Norwich City to his Eastville tally. He was in the Canaries’ side for both fixtures against Rovers during the 1907-08 campaign. An impressive return of fourteen goals in 33 Southern League matches with Rovers indicated his propensity for forward-thinking play, this tally including a hat-trick when the Eastville club defeated Southampton 5-0 at home in December 1906, Davie Walker claiming the other two goals. Prior to joining Rovers, “Jock” Young had been Kilmarnock’s top scorer in 1905-06, his twelve top-flight goals including a hat-trick in the 7-0 mauling of Queen’s Park in November 1905. He was selected as a reserve for Scotland’s international against Wales in 1906.

There was a John Vallance Young whose birth was registered in the Hurlford Registration District in 1888. His mother’s maiden name was Thomson. There were no other births with the name John [first or middle name] Young registered in Hurlford between 1880 and 1890. There were no records for Jack or Jock either. Even with his distinctive middle name and his mother’s maiden name I could not find a Scottish marriage or death record. It is possible that his middle name was not recorded in later records.

With help from a friend I think I have “your man”.

John Bell Young was born on 2 November 1883 at Old Portland Row, Hurlford and his birth was registered in the Riccarton Registration District. Hurlford and Riccarton are very close together.

He died age 73 on 20 July 1957 in Kilmarnock Infirmary and was living in Hurlford at the time.

"NEWCASTLE UNITED - The Ultimate Who's Who 1881-2014" says:

YOUNG John Bell. Inside right. 5 ft. 7 ins. b.Hurlford,Ayrshire, 2 November 1883.

Career : Kilmarnock Shawbank/Hurlford/UNITED trial Jan 1903; permanent June 1903/Kilmarnock July 1905/Bristol Rovers May 1906/Hurlford cs 1906/Norwich City May 1907/Kilmarnock Feb 1908 £50/Hurlford Oct 1908/Crystal Palace Oct 1909/Hurlford Aug 1910 to 1919.

This is followed by notes on his career which include:

"Only once was he selected with senior company, for a friendly at Carlisle against Shaddongate United during April 1904.Young was part of the successful United reserve side to win the Northern League title in 1904-05."

"During 1906 Young is noted as a reserve for Scotland's eleven to play Wales".

I am not sure about this. There was a"Young" in the reserve XI for this international. The newspapers show him as a Kilmarnock player and one newspaper gives his first initial as "A". John Young would have been at Bristol Rovers at the time.
