Lowest attendance?

Post by Angusfifer » Mon Dec 11, 2017 8:03 pm

Yesterday's figure at the Excelsior Stadium was given as 450. Is this the lowest ever crowd for a game between two full-time sides?
Raith must be borderline, heavily relying on gaining promotion this season, in retaining their full-time status given their home gates, while the Diamonds appear to be a financial basket case. With the game being shown live on TV in sub-zero temperatures just before Christmas it was the perfect "storm" for a poor attendance...

Nope... 431 was the attendance for Gretna FC v Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the top division in 2007-08, nevermind in tier 3!

Though not played in Scotland only 403 attended the Scottish Challenge Cup R3 tie TNS v Livingston this season... it was little better than the 733 who watched the same match-up at Almondvale last season, and only 617 attended Livingstston v Airdrie in this season's League Cup sections, which while not under 450 show crowds well under 1,000 are eminently possible.

It wouldn't surprise me if figures in the few hundreds have been posted many times in the lower reaches of tier 2, on other odd occasions (terrible weather or rearranged long distance games on midweek), matches in League Cup groupstages (particularly dead-rubbers), Spring Cup and equivalent tournaments, etc. etc.

There were special circumstances (it was a rearrangement of a match twice abandoned due to floodlight failure at a neutral venue over nowhere remotely near either side's home town) but ourselves and Ross County were both full time when the linked game was played in front of 266 people.
